France is the first trade partner of Tunisia. It provides more of the quarter of the imports and receives for approximately 30 p. 100 of exports. Italy and Germany are also significant trade partners. The exchanges also take the shape of mixed companies whose formation is encouraged by the liberalization of the economy. Tunisia has a rather dense road network of 23 100 km, of which 79 p. 100 are bituminized. It profits from a motorway network under development. It serves the great economic centers, Tunis, Sousse and soon Sfax and Bizerte. The country is also served by 1 860 km of railways, whose construction dates from French colonization. It was a question at that time of convoying the mining resources of the centers of extraction towards the ports. There exists in Tunisia four large ports: Tunis, Bizerte, Sousse and Sfax. Zarzis, port of less importance, is used like relay of the Libyan ports because of the maritime embargo on this country. Thanks to the tourist development, the country obtained six international airports. The monetary unit is the Tunisian dinar, subdivided into 1 000 millimes. The currency is convertible since 1992 for the commercial transactions of the companies. The Tunisian banking environment is almost entirely deprived and knows a fast modernization. It is not foreign with the rise of the Stock Exchange of values of Tunis. |
